Q & A with the Artist
|LISTEN TO THE MUSIC:|
Tell us about your first concert experience:
My first performance was at my high school actually. I was nervous at first, but was surprised to see that the crowd appreciated what I had to offer as a performer.
If you couldn't be a musician, what would you be doing instead?
I'd probably be a lawyer.
If you could collaborate with one artist, living or dead, who would it be and why?
Jay-Z because he is regarded as such a legend. As one of the best rappers and artists of our generation, he is someone I'd like to be able to share a record with.
If you became President, what is the first action you would take?
I'd work on healthcare reform. I know it's easy to say, but that would definitely be my main focus and I hope that it continues to be a focus of current and future presidents.
What social cause is closest to your heart?
World hunger issues really get to me because there is so much one person can do to help, and it is sad that we still haven't figured out a way to better distribute food to those in need.
What does the right to vote mean to you?
It means that you're involved in impacting a country or the world itself. We vote when we believe in something.
What bands or artists did you listen to when you were in high school? And which bands or artists influenced your style the most?
I listened to a lot of John Mayer, Kanye, and Jay-Z and they've all been equally influential to my music. I actually met John Mayer for the first time a few weeks ago, and am excited to one day meet Jay-Z and Kanye as well.
What activity or group were you involved with in high school that might surprise people today?
The debate team. It might surprise people at first, but usually when I tell someone they say something like "Oh, now I get it".
What's the biggest obstacle that you had to overcome in high school? (could be personal or academic)
The hardest thing for me was to keep focused on studying. As I started to take music more seriously, it was difficult to balance the two.
Do you do any volunteer or community work when you're not on tour?
I help my church out with different community projects and also make it a point to go back and visit my high school and help out the people who supported me from the beginning.
What change would you like to see in our society in the next year?
I would like to see the murder rate lowered significantly. Once again, and easy thing to say, and a harder thing to do, but the violent crime in Chicago is a constant issue that needs to be resolved. There is too much talk, and not enough action.
